2006-07 Schools & Wells ProjectsCoalition of the Willing (COW) Bor County, Southern Sudan Bor is a county within Southern Sudan, which over the last two decades of the Sudan civil war has suffered devastation beyond imagination. Due to its close proximity to the Nile and its historical, as well as economic importance, Bor has suffered unprecedented consequences of war ranging from mass displacement and starvations to isolation from the rest of the world for the last 22 years by the successive Islamic regimes in Khartoum. Bor County is comprised of five court centers, also known as Payams. These are Jalle, Baidit, Makuac, Anyidi and Kolnyang. A court center, or Payam, is a collection of four to five villages put under one court and one leadership at the civil level. The county covers a landmass of 6,890 square miles with a population of over 180,000 people, according to the Khartoum government's statistics of the late 1980's. 2006-07 Schools & Wells Projects Starting in December, it is our goal to build a school and a well for each Payam (5 total) before the next rainy season begins in April 2007. Topographically, the county is in a low-lying clay plain prone to floods almost on a yearly basis because of heavy downpours of rain from April to December and due to the flatness of the land, which makes drainage impossible. Bor sits on a swampy part of Southern Sudan, known as Sudd that holds a billion gallons of water from the Nile and rains collected. Fortunately, the land is fertile and supports crops as well as other plant growth. Before the war, farming was one of the major sources of livelihood besides cattle rearing. Current status: • The Coalition of the Willing has obtained its non-profit 501c3 status. We are accepting your tax-deductible donation. • Chol Beer, who lives in Juba, Southern Sudan, is in Bor County to meet with Maker Thiong Maal to determine the progress of local efforts to build the schools. • Samuel Garang Akau, a recent Stanford graduate, is preparing to travel to Bor County immediately to help coordinate this effort and to act as the communication link between Bor County and international fundraising efforts.
Coalition of the Willing (COW) • Begin talking with groups, such as schools and churches, about adopting one of the schools for long-term funding of teacher salaries, school supplies, meals and maintenance. 2005 Famine Relief Trip – Project Background The initial purpose of the trip was to provide relief assistance for the inhabitants of Bor County because of the famine that was looming over the area due to the previous year's low harvest and increase in the number of displaced persons returning home after the peace agreement; making local supplies of food insufficient for survival. Together with the support of the American friends, the Sudanese community was able to raised $50k for famine relief within two months. This successful effort led to the naming of a team of three commissioned to carry out food delivery in the earmarked region of Bor County.
The purpose of the investment is to build safe and reliable classrooms for students to take classes without fear of it collapsing on them. Each Payam or court center received eight thousand US dollars and ten thousand Kenyan shillings on top meant to be used to facilitate the formation of a committee. The money was deposited in the accounts of various reliable NGOs operating in the respective court centers. The villagers have set up committees responsible for building the classes and accountable to the NGOs holding funds.
